About Electric Boat Corporation
The Electric Boat Corporation was first established in 1899 by Isaac Rice in order to build John Philip Holland’s submersible ship designs. By the 1900’s, the Electric Boat Corporation built the Holland VI, a submarine which was commissioned into the United States Navy in April, 1900. This submarine proved to be very successful, and the company was then asked to produce follow-up models which led to the Plunger class of ships. Through World War I and II, the Electric Boat Corporation continued producing many submarines under contract, ranking high among United States corporations for their military production contracts. After the war, the company reorganized into the General Dynamics Corporation, establishing the Electric Boat name for their submarine-building operations. Currently, the company continues to produce submarines, including models within the Virginia class that remain in active service to this day.
