About NEC Corporation
NEC Corporation is a Japanese multinational IT and electronics company based in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. The company provides IT and network solutions, including cloud computing, AI, IoT platform, and 5G network products to business enterprises, communications services providers, and government agencies. It has also been the biggest PC vendor in Japan since the 1980s.
NEC began in 1899 when Nippon Electric Limited Partnership, later renamed NEC, was established by Kunihiko Iwadare and Takeshiro Maeda with a focus on producing, selling, and maintaining telephones and switches. In the beginning of the 20th century, NEC expanded into foreign markets such as China, Korea, and the United States with their telephone services. Around this time, they also began importing appliances such as electric fans, kitchen appliances, and more. When the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake hit Japan, much of the telephone and telegraph infrastructure of the country was destroyed and NEC lost offices and workers. Soon after, the Ministry of Communications of Japan began an initiative to install automatic telephone switching systems and establish radio broadcasting in response to the earthquake. Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Co. released their first automatic switching system during this time and NEC quickly became their major sales agent. Ahead of World War II, NEC began their own radio communications system, and worked to provide the Ministry of Communications with the A-type switching system, the first of its kind in Japan. During the war, their plants were placed under military control and many were destroyed by bombings.
After the war, NEC began to find success and growth again as they expanded their Korean markets and began to develop and research integrated circuits in 1960. They also began their move into the aerospace market when they produced a satellite communications Earth station for Switzerland. In the 1980’s, the company found success as the dominant leader of the PC industry in Japan, and their various branches worked to manufacture electronic products such as processors, printers, monitors, and video game consoles. At the beginning of the 21st century, NEC continued developing their semiconductor, computer, and electronics sectors with great success. Today, the company continues to expand in foreign and domestic markets, and make advancements in their various products and services for both consumers and enterprises.
