About ABB Group
ABB Group was founded in 1988 through the merger of two Swedish manufacturers, Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) and Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC). Both of these companies had been in operation since the late 1800s, and both produced electrical products including generators, lights, motors, turbines, and transformers.
During its first two years of operation, ABB acquired more than fifty companies, including Flakt AB, Sadelmi/Cogepi, Scandia-Randers A/S, Westinghouse Electric’s transmission and distribution assets, and Combustion Engineering. In 1991, ABB introduced the IRB 6000 robot, a modular design used primarily in the spot-welding industry. This became one of the fastest and most accurate models available. ABB also saw growth in Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia. By 1994, ABB Group had more than 30,000 employees and 100 plants, engineering, marketing, and service centers in Asia.
In 2000, ABB sold off assets like its nuclear power business and fossil-fuel operations to focus on renewable energy and transmission and distribution. Despite enduring financial uncertainty in the early 2000s, ABB would later acquire Kuhlman Electric Corporation, Baldor Electric, Thomas & Betts, Power-One, Bernecker + Rainer Industrie-Elektronik, and GE Industrial Solutions, General Electric’s global electrification business.
